When I first started watching birds in the yard, I didn’t really know what breeds they were. The Junco bird is one of the first that I looked up and I was surprised to learn they were relatives in the Sparrow family and despite its somewhat dull colors of brown, grey, white and black, they are a fun and feisty breed. They love to flash their bright white tail feathers, sing loudly for all to hear, and are quite demanding little things when you forget to refill the birdseed feeder.
Juncos are one of my favorite birds to watch flitting around the yard. They are constantly curious about the world around them. All of these little birds love when my drip hoses come on around my garden. I’ve seen them clinging to the flowers and stone wall upside-down while drinking from the drips as the water cascades to the ground.
One of the silly Juncos who frequents my yard was enamored by the little shiny things hanging from my wind chimes. He sang to his own reflection for several minutes before a few of the other birds in the yard decided to see what all the fuss was about. Another Junco seemed taken by the grace and beauty of a hummingbird in flight, which became a moment I’ll never forget. Witnessing this moment was the very thing that reignited my creativity and inspired me to draw these wonderful birds. The full story come soon.
This is the third sketch in my Backyard Bird series, titled Just a Junco. Interested in purchasing a limited edition matted print of this cute little guy? Click here to see if prints are available.
