Sitting in my garden surrounded by lush plants and fragrant flowers is where I feel most calm, creative, and happy. Inspiration freely comes to me when I encounter nature up close wherever I am, but I’ve had some extraordinary encounters in my backyard.

After weeks of sitting in my garden watching hummingbirds flit around the yard sipping nectar from the Salvia, Dahlias, and other blooming flowers, one came to greet me up close. I first heard him chirping and the sound of his wings fluttering, and without warning, there he was. About 18 inches from my face, checking me out. He hovered there for a moment–flitting from side to side–floating back to the Hot Lips Salvia bush for another treat, and back to me again. His curiosity took him back and forth from the flowers to me several times as he worked his way around my yard. He even sat on a branch nearby and watched me before he dissapeared.
Experiences like these bring joy to my heart and peace to my mind, and I know I’m not alone. Millions of nature lovers feel as if the hummingbird is their spirit animal. When you catch a glimpse of one, there’s a sense of luck in the air as it quickly disappears. Being buzzed by one is fun and exciting, but having one curiously visit you over and over again, feels like pure serenity. This is a personal message from Mother Nature to enjoy the little things and take in the magical moments that happen all around you.
This is the fourth sketch in my Backyard Birds series, titled Curiosity of a Hummingbird. Interested in purchasing a limited edition matted print of this curious fellow? Click here to see availability.
