Backyard Birds: Bluebird Beauty

For a few months last summer, a young pair of bluebirds lived in an old birdhouse attached to the side of the large Locust tree in my backyard. It has been said that the bluebird has lived in writers’ and poets’ imaginations as age-old bearers of joy and reverie. It’s no wonder they got the attention of daydreamer with their colorful blue feathers and gentle songs.

I daydream often and in those moments my imagination is running wild. As a young girl, maybe in 1st grade, my teacher Mrs. Cheney would call out, “Earth to Laura!” to bring me back to the room. This frequent daydreaming was attributed to being highly intelligent or bored by the topics being discussed in my class, but I believe it was that my creativity and imagination were being stimulated–I could get lost in a daydream for hours.

The unfortunate truth is that children are taught to control or completely abandon their daydreaming at an early age, and their imaginations dim. I believe creativity is one of the critical skills that is lost to this change in ourselves and it is essential to allow that back into your life as an adult. Recapturing the daydreamer within me has opened my imagination further and allowed me to reconnect with my inner child. In allowing my imagination to thrive I’ve found that inspiration comes easier to me now than it ever did. I believe imagination and creativity are muscles that when exercised frequently can tap into your superpowers and reveal your child-like sense of the world. Be curious. Be Joyful. Thrive.

Let this sketch fill your heart and soul with joy and bring imagination and creativity into your life.

I believe creativity is within us all and is the thread that weaves our experiences to the world around us. When not immersed in the creation of my own art, I can be found hiking the trails of Oregon and the Pacific North West, exploring the natural beauty of the world through my travels, indulging in culinary delights, and visiting artists at exhibitions and craft fairs.
