The common House Sparrow visits my yard often; they are a social bird and love to dine wherever people are. While I was spending the weekend with a friend in Los Angeles, she took me to an adorable little cafe for breakfast. Just as we sat down at our table outside on the patio, a friendly little House Sparrow made himself known by hopping around by our fee. He hid in the bush nearby just as we noticed him, but he had a failproof plan to patiently wait for a crumb to drop nearby and swoop in to snatch it. We watched as he waited till another diner left and grabed some tasty morsels off their discarded plates. These opportunists are friendly, intelligent, and can take on complicated tasks, like opening automatic doors to get food that’s located inside buildings and warehouses. It’s their patience, creativity, and resourcefulness that I admire most. These three qualities help me to discover new paths to success in whatever I want to achieve.
Try following the House Sparrow’s lead by opening yourself up to new opportunities and using your creative thinking skills to work through challenges you face. You never know, it might lead you to unexpected outcomes and new adventures.
This is the sixth sketch in my Backyard Bird series, titled Sparrow’s Glance, and the first that was sketched in colored pencil. Interested in purchasing a limited edition matted print of this friendly little guy? Click here to see print availability.
